Our world is made up of many different countries, each with their own unique customs and cultures. So take some time and celebrate different countries by having a culture night. This could be done on a monthly basis where each month your family learns about a different country. Or you can take one night and have each family member share information about a different country.
You will want to start by visiting your local library or searching on-line for information about the country you are interested in. Then use all or one of the following ideas for your own culture night.
Play a Game
Learn a game that originated from the country and play it as a family.
Make a Craft
Make something that is unique to the country. For Japan you could make a paper lantern, kite, or learn origami. For Mexico you could make a piñata together.
Create a Flag
Use paper or material to create the country’s flag.
Share Interesting Facts
Find some interesting facts that each person could share. Consider things like:
- Historical facts – make them interesting like the French Revolution and the guillotine
- A holiday that is celebrated in the country
- An important person that came from that country – this could be an artist, musician, or historical figure
- Describe the building or history of notable monuments such as Big Ben, the Kremlin, or Leaning Tower of Pisa (including a picture is a great addition)
Eat Food
Take some time and create a full meal or just a dessert that originates from your country. If you are celebrating more than one country make a variety of foods that your family can sample.
Read a Story
Share a folktale that originated from the country.
Look at Pictures
Find pictures on-line or in books that show the culture and different tourist sites from the country and get a glimpse of the country.
