Celebrate School Starting With A Crayon Cake

School will be starting soon. Your children might not be happy that they have to go back to learning and studying. So make a crayon cake to make the transition easier. If your children are excited about school beginning (like my son, who is going into second grade when they still like school) celebrate the event. Or throw a back-to-school party and serve this edible crayon cake. (Look for my upcoming blog for ideas for a back-to-school party.)

You will need:
1 cake mix
1 white frosting
food coloring
decorating bag and tips (or white frosting in a tube)

Directions:
1. Make the cake mix according to the directions on the box. Bake it in a 9 x 13 pan. Line the pan with waxed or parchment paper so the cake will easily come out. When the cake is cool turn it out onto a cookie sheet, cover it with plastic wrap, and put it in the freezer to freeze.

2. After the cake is frozen you will cut off the top 3 inches of the cake lengthwise. Cut the 3 x 13 piece in half. Then add a segment to each end of the larger rectangle. You might need to trim the small segments a little so they are even with the larger piece. You will need to cut two triangles off both sides of one end to form the tip of the crayon. You can let your children eat the triangle pieces.

3. Color most of the white frosting the color that you want your crayon to be. Leave about ΒΌ cup for decorating the cup. Take one-fourth of the colored frosting and add 3-4 more drops of the food coloring to make a darker shade of the same color. Frost the cut ends with the darker frosting, this part is the crayon. Frost the large segment of cake with the lighter color of frosting creating the wrapper. If you bought a decorating tube of white frosting you can color the entire can of frosting.

4. Put the rest of the white frosting into a decorating bag with a round tip or use your tube of white frosting. Pipe on the lines and write the word Crayola across the top. Look at a crayon if you aren’t sure where to place the lines. Then cut and enjoy.
