Celebrating a Birthday Milestone

This week is a big deal in our house. There is just something about your youngest child turning 13…yes; my “baby” has hit the teen years. It is hard to believe that I am “officially” the mother of three teenagers.

He has really been looking forward to this week, as I think he has been feeling a bit slighted as of late. I can’t deny the fact that for the past couple of months there has been a lot of focus on my oldest son.

It’s the preparations and talks about him joining the Air Force, turning 18 just a couple of weeks ago, his upcoming high school graduation and parties being discussed for that and his going away. The spotlight has definitely been on him.

So for my youngest he gets to be in the spotlight this week and I could tell when he woke up his birthday morning, he was ready to relish it. I have some traditional things that I do for each of my children’s birthdays, which they continue to look forward to every year.

For instance, they always have a card waiting for them. This is my one chance to get a little sappy and share my heart. Then I always have their favorite king-sized candy bar attached to their card.

For my oldest son it was a Hershey bar, for my youngest it was a Nestle Crunch and next month when my daughter turns 15, it will be a Kit Kat. It might sound small but children really do appreciate it when you know what their favorite things are.

Then on their birthdays they get to choose what they have for dinner. Being able to select their favorite restaurant is another thing they really appreciate. Although, I have to admit I wasn’t really looking forward to “Wendy’s” for dinner…yes, believe it or not, that is what my 13-year-old son chooses for his birthday dinner.

Most of their birthdays are fairly simple where we celebrate with family and if they want, can have a couple of friends over. There are certain birthdays however, that are extra special and I go a little more out for.

Turning 13 is definitely one of those as this is an important milestone. So he is eagerly anticipating this weekend for the “big” birthday party. I have a few surprises up my sleeve that I am sure will bring him a lot of joy.

How do you celebrate the special birthdays, where your child has reached a milestone?
