Celebrating Christmas at School

Schools have different ways of doing different things. While all schools in my county have a different point of view on many topics, teachers also carry out things differently within a school.

There are some issues that schools have to make decisions about based upon the ideas and beliefs of the parents and students as a whole. There are some things that possibly cannot please or meet the values and beliefs of all of the families in the school.

Holiday celebration is one of those things. Most families in one area have the same basic ideas about holiday celebrations. However, a few families have very different views about how holidays should be celebrated. In addition, schools and teachers have different views too. Some teachers go all out for holidays. They decorate their rooms and create many art projects to celebrate.

This celebration of holidays can be controversial among parents and students. Halloween is usually thought to be the holiday of conflict among families due to the spooks and gobblings and ghosts that accompany it.

However in today’s world Christmas can also be questionable. Some families do not wish to involve their children in the belief of Santa Claus. Other families do no use Christmas as a material holiday and give out gifts. Some families do not celebrate Christmas due to lack of Christian religious values.

In my previous years I have had few conflicts due to holiday celebrations. We have had a student that did not celebrate Christmas with presents. However her family decided to let her participate in the exchange of presents at school.

Last week, our students had the option of having their pictures made with Santa Claus. Letters were sent home to parents to notify them of Santa Claus’s visit. The parents could return the letter stating that they did not wish for their children to be photographed with Santa Claus.
