Celebrating National Marriage Week

Did you know that it’s National Marriage Week? It goes from February 7th through the 14th, Valentine’s Day. I love the fact that we have an entire week to recognize and celebrate something so very important.

So what is the point to National Marriage Week? It is to build a stronger marriage culture since it has been found that healthy marriages can reduce the risk of poverty and benefit children in a number of ways.

It is also a way to encourage married people to do what they can to strengthen their marriages and thereby, reducing the rate of divorce. Clearly divorce is a big problem in the United States.

So how do we strengthen our marriages? There are a number of steps that we can take. Each day if you wake up with this question on your mind, “What can I do today to help my spouse?” you are already well on your way to strengthening your marriage.

Each and every day there is something that you can do for your spouse. You know your spouse best and understand what will speak to their heart.

For instance, my husband has a long 10 hour day of work. We got some snow last night and it would be easy to leave it for him. But instead I took the time to shovel it. When he comes home later and sees that it has been shoveled, it will become like a deposit of love into his heart.

Sometimes we think it’s only the “big stuff” that will strengthen our marriages. But really, it’s the small doses that add up. The more you do each day to strengthen your marriage the better it will be.

So in celebration of National Marriage Week why don’t you make a commitment to ask yourself that same question each day…what can I do today to help my spouse? What can I do to make my spouse enjoy their day? What can I do to improve our marriage?
