Celebrating National Scrapbooking Day Part One

What is National Scrapbooking Day?

My favorite day of the year is approaching rapidly. I’ll be starting the first weekend in May by celebrating my favorite hobby – Scrapbooking.

Saturday, May 6th, 2006 is National Scrapbooking Day (NSD). This date is set aside to commemorate, celebrate and promote the importance of preserving your memories. Can you believe our beloved hobby has it’s own holiday?

“Scrapbooking combines family history and contemporary crafts in a fun and interesting way, bringing together adults and children alike,” said Fran Saperstein, Publisher of A-Z Magazines and Scrapbooking.com Magazine. “Scrapbooking continues to be the fastest-growing hobby in the crafts industry, with over 21% of all American households scrapbooking an average of 20 hours each month.”

On National Scrapbooking Day, many of the scrapbooking specialty stores across the United States promote our hobby in special ways. There are usually awesome sales, all day scrapbooking crops, and classes. These many events are focused on sharing techniques, as well as having fun with friends and family, while focusing on preserving our memories.

Many scrapbookers celebrate the occasion by planning their own event or attending an event. These events are designed to giving them the time, space and energy to work on their own scrapbooks as part of a large group of friends.

In addition to being able to visit your local scrapbook store on National Scrapbooking Day, there are other types of events you should watch for such as:

  • Crops
  • Retreats
  • Scrapbook Bashes
  • All-Day/Night Crops
  • Crop-‘Til-you-Drop
  • Cropathons and other events with cute names

Although the primary focus of National Scrapbooking Day is working on your own albums to preserve your memories, there are things to keep your eye out for as well:

  • Make & Takes (short, educational projects allowing the participant to finish a project and take it home)
  • games (usually focused on scrapbooking)
  • contests (submit those layouts!)
  • door prizes (entered just for showing up in some cases)
  • page projects and more
