As if you needed another reason to stuff yourself silly today…
Not only is it Fat Tuesday, but March 8, 2011, is also International Women’s Day. Talk about coincidences.
Typically, International Women’s Day is celebrated by waving bras in the air.
In New Orleans on Fat Tuesday, females also let “the girls” breathe easy, but for an entirely different reason.
Also, I don’t think bead throwing is involved in Women’s Day festivities, though maybe it should, given that today is the 100th anniversary of an occasion set aside to recognize the achievements of women worldwide.
Power to the XX chromosomes.
We’re an amazing group.
You know, I’m really not a U-RAH-RAH kind of gal in the sisterhood of feminism. I’m more of a suffer-in-silence-and-cheer-from-the-trenches type. At least I think I am.
In the years since becoming a mom, I have gained a deeper appreciation for women who toil tirelessly as they struggle to balance motherhood, marriage and a career. These days I watch with renewed interest when society applauds the achievements of courageous women who have paved the way for an entire sorority of struggling sisters. In addition, I also keep an eye out for the anonymous females who bust their backs each day taking two steps forward and one step back in the journey to break through the glass ceiling and abolish long held stereotypes.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2011 is “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.” Given that I work for online employers, along with dozens of female colleagues, in an effort to support and offer advice to other women, this is definitely a day I can get behind.
In fact, in honor of International Women’s Day I plan to eat two pieces of chocolate cake for dessert tonight. Okay, the cake splurge is in honor of Fat Tuesday, but the fact that I refuse to ask anyone at the table if I look fat after eating the cake, well, that’s all to commemorate International Women’s Day. After all, who says skinny girls are the only ones that contribute to the betterment of women everywhere?
