I was watching something the other night on television and Priscilla Presley came on screen. At least I think it was Priscilla Presley, it could have been the Joker from Batman. She was once a beautiful woman and even seemed to be aging gracefully but apparently, some butcher got a hold of her face and mutilated it. She was no longer even remotely attractive, but something odd looking. Not exactly Michael Jackson odd looking, but still, it was not good.
I started wondering why some celebrities end up with good plastic surgery results and some seem to get horrible results. Surely, Priscilla has enough money to afford the best plastic surgeon. Another person who has changed his looks dramatically is Burt Reynolds. I still like him but his skin certainly looks pulled to the point of it being painful. I won’t even mention Michael Jackson – just too easy a target!
It seems in Hollywood, there are three types of plastic surgery: the good, the bad, and that which renders you unrecognizable. Who is in the good plastic surgery category? Liz Taylor, Paul Newman, Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, and Jane Fonda all look exceptionally well for their ages and each has reportedly had plastic surgery. Who are the celebrities that have had bad surgery? You can add David Gest (but maybe he always looked funny), Marie Osmond (or is she just scared all the time?), Melanie Griffith (I am afraid those lips are going to take over the world someday), Farrah Fawcett (like Priscilla, she was once beautiful, now just scary), and Glen Campbell (put him in the Burt-stretched-face category). Then there are those made mostly unrecognizable by plastic surgery – Mickey Rourke, Bruce Jenner, and Jennifer Grey. I used to have a crush on Bruce Jenner circa 1979, but now, he looks like a soccer mom – too feminine. Poor Jennifer Grey was talked into getting a nose job because someone thought it would make her look less ethnic and open up more roles. Unfortunately, all it did was take her from girl next door cute to generic Hollywood starlet and make her unrecognizable. She has since said the plastic surgery she had on her nose was the worst mistake she had ever made.
Then there are the Queens of Plastic Surgery – Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers. With a combined age of what surely must be about 700 years old, both have had multiple, multiple surgeries. They still look fairly good for their age, but not much like their old selves.
Whom did I leave off the list?
