Celebrities In Trouble: Wesley Snipes

Wesley, Wesley, Wesley…you are a good actor. You are great at action films like Passenger 57 and the Blade trilogy. You were funny in Major League. Heck, I even enjoyed your performance in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.

I know you have a few run-ins with the trouble in the past. In 2004, Christopher Williams said it was you, not him that beat Halle Barry so badly she lost part of her hearing in one ear. Also in 2004, Lanise Pettis claimed you were the father of her child, but a paternity test later showed that was not true. There was that 2005 incident where South Africa would not let you in the country because you had a forged passport. Also in 2005, you also filed suit again New Line Cinema for $5 million, stating that they failed to pay you all your money for Blade: Trinity.

And now, you are being accused of tax evasion. You were indicted on eight counts of tax fraud. It is said you tried to cheat the IRS out of $12 million in falsified refund claims stretching back six years. Wesley, this carries a 16-year prison term if you are found guilty!

Wesley, you may be able to cheat some people, but the IRS is no one to fool around with! Didn’t you learn anything from the Richard Hatch story? And don’t forget, the IRS was able to bring down Chicago mobster Al Capone when no one else could. He spent part of his 11-year sentence in prison until he was transferred to a mental institution.

What is it with celebrities either not paying their taxes or making false claims? Or is it not really the fault of the celebrity, but whomever they put in charge of their finances and taxes? Hopefully Wesley will be cleared of this charge and can go back to what he does best – making movies!

I work full-time as a web developer at UTHSC and most of my other time is spent with my son (born 2004). I love everything pop culture, but also enjoy writing about green living (it has opened my eyes to many things!) and health (got to worry about that as you get older!).
