I figured I would start with the bad news as it is a bit more shocking than the good news:
BAD NEWS
Disheartening news for David Letterman: according to news reports, two inmates, including one who was once accused of plotting to kidnap the talk show host’s young son, escaped Friday in a truck while working at a state prison ranch in Montana.
The two inmates, Kelly A. Frank and convicted burglar William J. Willcutt were reportedly working with a group of other prisoners assigned on a project involving irrigation pipes. Prison officials said a supervisor noticed one of the inmates and a truck were missing around 4:20 p.m., and the prison was locked down. A head count later revealed that Frank was missing as well.
Officers say the truck was later recovered off prison property, but there have been no signs of Frank or Willcutt. You’ll recall Frank made headlines in 2005 when he was arrested on allegations that he had devised a plan to kidnap Letterman’s son, lied to investigators and overcharged Letterman for painting work at his ranch. In the end Frank was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
No word on Letterman’s reaction to Frank’s escape, though I’m sure his personal security (and that of his family’s) is being beefed up.
GOOD NEWS
On a much lighter note… one of my favorite bands will soon be debuting a new album. After a 15 year extended break, the B-52s are reportedly putting the finishing touches on an album featuring new material.
I’m thrilled! I can’t wait to take a break from “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack” and “Roam” for a while and get hooked on some new tunes from the eccentric and high-spirited group.
So what took so long? According to various members of the group, after the ‘Cosmic Thing’ and ‘Good Stuff’ tours in 1989 and 1992, they were simply “burned out.” Also, with band members living in New York, Georgia and Florida, it was tricky to get together and write new material.
The new album will have 11 new tracks featuring the group’s danceable, party vibe music. Look for the new album to drop early next year. Meanwhile, the group says it plans a handful of U.S. and European tour dates this summer, with a full concert schedule planned when the album is released.
