Celebrity Celebrations

David Letterman may have found success in New York, but administrators at his midwestern alma mater want him to know that they haven’t forgotten about him. Officials at Ball State University announced yesterday that they plan to name the school’s new communication building after Letterman, a 1970 graduate. (Personally, I think it’s just a matter of time before the entire school is renamed David Letterman University.) The late night talk show host often mentions the college on his CBS show and the campus is already home to the Letterman Scholarship in the Department of Telecommunications. (Mark my words it’s just a matter of time before the entire school is renamed.)

Joking aside, Ball State’s president said the idea to name the facility for Letterman was not the talk show host’s idea. In fact, school trustees say Letterman was reluctant to approve the building’s name because he didn’t want the attention.

Letterman’s mother reportedly talked her son into it. Dorothy Mengering attended Monday’s announcement yesterday in his hometown of Indianapolis and speaking like a true mom said the following:

“I’m so thrilled that David finally decided to let them do this for him. He’s a very special young man, and I’m very proud of him.”

Letterman and Mengering also announced that both she and her son would attend the building’s September dedication.

According to school officials, the new building is expected to provide much-needed space for the university’s emerging digital media content production facilities. The $21 million communication and media center currently houses Indiana Public Radio and also accommodates the school’s journalism and telecommunications departments.

While David Letterman was adding his name to a building, Sarah Thompson, who starred as Rose in the CW’s 7th Heaven was adding a name to her driver’s license—Kane. The actress married screenwriter Brad Kane three days ago in Santa Barbara, California.

“It was breathtakingly beautiful,” the new bride told reporters following the ceremony. “It was amazing to be surrounded by the people you love the most.”

According to PEOPLE magazine, the 27-year-old actress and her new husband were married in a Jewish and Christian ceremony outdoors on a lawn overlooking the ocean. Thompson reportedly wore a gown by Vera Wang, while Kane was in a Hugo Boss suit.

Among the 110 guests celebrating the milestone with the celebrity couple were Lost executive producer Damon Lindelof, who was a groomsman, Mission: Impossible 3 screenwriter Alex Kurtzman and the former star of The Bachelor (and brother of Jerry), Charlie O’Connell.
