New daddy Tiger Woods is breaking his silence about his recent entry into fatherhood. Woods’ 2-week old daughter Sam Alexis may not be big enough to swing a golf club just yet, but her proud papa says she has held the club in her hand—-or at least tried to.
“She couldn’t quite hold it, but it was there,” Woods revealed to the media gathered at the AT&T National Golf Tournament in Maryland, which he’s hosting this week.
Woods also disclosed how he and his wife chose their firstborn’s name. According to the 31-year-old golf champ, Woods’ late father Earl used to call Tiger, Sam.
“We wanted to have a name that would be meaningful. My father had always called me Sam since the day I was born. He rarely ever called me Tiger,” Woods told reporters.
Woods added that his father told him that he looked more like a “Sam” than a “Tiger” and the name stuck.
As for being on diaper duty, Woods admits he has been changing diapers and getting up for early morning feedings.
The new dad will no doubt be getting advice from fellow PGA pops. He’s already gotten more than that from rival on the golf course Phil Mickelson. The father of three young children recently posted a comment on his official website about the birth of Tiger’s new daughter and joked about how the rivalry between them may continue with their kids.
Here’s part of Mickelson’s post:
“Amy and I want to congratulate Tiger and Élin Woods again on the birth of Sam Alexis; we’ve seen their pictures on the Internet. We sent them a mini ping-pong table. Our kids have had a little head start on Sam Alexis and expect them to continue the Mickelson domination over the Woods in pong but we thought we should give Sam Alexis a chance to jump-start her own game.”
In other celebrity daddy news, former Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson is on his way to building his own boy band. Richardson’s wife gave birth to their first child, a son, on Tuesday, according to a message on the singer’s blog.
The 35-year-old new dad says the couple named their new son Mason. The baby boy weighed in at a healthy 8-pounds, 2-ounces and reportedly has a full head of dark hair.
Richardson and his wife met in 1993 in the employee cafeteria of Orlando’s Disney-MGM Studios theme park, where he worked as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and she was a dancer with the park’s Beauty and the Beast show.
