It’s no secret that Hollywood A-lister’s don’t have to have knowledge of fashion design (or fashion sense for that matter) to have an entire collection created in their name. These days you can buy leggings by Lindsay Lohan, jeans by Justin Timberlake, dresses by Madonna and tank tops by Jude Law’s ex-girlfriend Sienna Miller.
But the latest round of celebrities turned fashion designers has me rolling my eyes in ways I didn’t think possible.
Take for example Britney Spears. The reforming popwreck had custody of her two young sons stripped from her following her public meltdowns, yet she’s now in talks to create a clothing line for children. She barely sees her own children but we, mere mortal parents are supposed to want to spend our hard earned dough on “fanciful creations” courtesy of a former Mouseketeer? Reps for Christian Audigier recently announced that the Ed Hardy designer met with Brit to discuss collaborating on a children’s clothing line. According to insiders, Spears sought out the former Von Dutch designer specifically to discuss the project, seeking his “flair on the line.”
And if you thought that bizzaro announcement was ironic, get a load to this newsflash:
New mom Nicole Richie, who just gave birth to a daughter and a new jewelry line, apparently is not busy enough. (Did I mention she is working on launching a children’s line and a signature fragrance?) So she has decided to lend her name to a maternity line as well.
Maternity clothes by Nicole Richie?
Gimme a break.
I seriously doubt the 85-pound (when’s she wet) former reality TV star wore a single maternity item during her entire pregnancy.
Richie admits that she wore non-maternity designer leggings and scarves while she was expecting daughter Harlow. She also recently revealed that her boyfriend Joel Madden’s shirts were a staple in her pre-delivery days. Yet, Richie feels as though she is qualified to design an entire line of clothes for women who weigh more pre-pregnancy than she did while she was nine months along.
“My maternity line will be about making women look and feel good at a really emotional time,” Richie told reporters. “It’s about showing your best self, not your tired, worn-down self.”
I realize there are a slew of designers, who have never been pregnant, yet go onto launch successful maternity lines; however, their background was fashion, not being the subject of eating disorder rumors.
Then again, what are the chances that Richie will actually be lending more to this project other than her name?
