Celebrity Fashion Trends–Would You Wear It?

I will be the first to admit that I am no fashion expert. But, it doesn’t stop me from commenting on what other people are wearing. Not so much the people I see on the street or in the mall; I usually reserve my critiques for trend setting celebrities who are prominently featured in popular fashion and entertainment magazines. (I find it’s safer for me to pick apart someone’s outfit when they are out of earshot.)

I just picked up a magazine, which provided a list of the latest summer fashion trends. I was stunned to see what made “the list.” Take a look and see if you would consider purchasing any of these items… then ask yourself, “Would I be brave enough to wear this in public?”

FINGERLESS GLOVES

PEOPLE magazine calls the trend: “street-urchin chic” and note that actress Lindsay Lohan and fashionista Paris Hilton consider them the “perfect way to keep their hands warm while still modeling their manicures.” I think the women look like they forgot to take their weight-lifting gloves off before leaving the gym. What’s more, I’m not sure how practical they are. Even if you wore them to protect yourself from germs, your fingers are still exposed which is where most bacteria breeds anyway.

WIDE BELTS

Tori Spelling, Jamie-Lynn Spears and Christina Aguilera use the belts to accentuate their waists. The celebs were photographed using the thick leather belts to cinch up a dress, long shirt, and a pair of shorts. Personally, the thick belt and short shorts look was a bit much for me, but I suppose all’s fair in the world of fashion.

SHORT SHORTS

Speaking of short shorts… who said Daisy Dukes were sooooo last year. “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria and Nicky Hilton not only love their short shorts, they pair them up with mile-high heels. To me, this combination is hideous. I understand that the heels help elongate the legs, which are exposed by the short shorts, but when I think of shorts I think parks and beaches—how do you keep from sinking into the grass in 4-inch heels?

AVIATOR SUNGLASSES

One fashion magazine shows Jennifer Aniston, Kate Bosworth and Naomi Watts “acing the ‘Top Gun’ look” in gold-rimmed shades. They look great. However, when I tried on a pair at a local department store the look was less “aviator” and more “avian.” I guess you need the right shape face to pull off this “Top Gun” look. (See my blog: “Celebrity Style Fix: Sunglasses.”)

CAMOUFLAGE

Ashton Kutcher and Heidi Klum, have been seen around L.A. sporting the military-inspired look. My opinion: leave the look to the professionals… I’m talking about soldiers, not actors who play them on screen.

SHIRT DRESSES and LEGGINGS

Under the heading: “Everything is New Again” comes the return of the ‘80s classics thigh-skimming tops and skin-tight leggings recently worn by fashion plates Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham and Lindsay Lohan. This was the outfit de jour when I was in junior high school. Guess I should have saved some of my favorite pairs of leggings… then again even I if I had, I don’t think 20 years later I would be brave enough to venture outside wearing them.
