Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought that part of being rich and famous was that you happily avoided having to make money by selling your personal items on the street? Okay, the celebrity in question here is actress Tori Spelling… and yes, it’s true; she did inherit less than 1/300ths of her later father’s estate (TV mogul Aaron Spelling), but I can’t imagine she is facing skid row.
Whatever the impetus may be, the now five-months pregnant ex-“Beverly Hills, 90210” star and her husband Dean McDermott are determined to sell her wares at her Studio City, California home today… in the form of a yard sale.
“I’m having the sale because we’re moving and my taste has changed,” Spelling tells PEOPLE magazine. “Plus I’m a notorious pack rat; I keep everything. And I wanted to get organized before the baby arrives, so this seemed the perfect time to clean house. It feels good!”
Initially the sale seemed to make sense to me; after all, the couple is currently looking to buy a bed and breakfast for their upcoming reality show on the Oxygen cable network. According to Spelling, they started filming about two weeks ago and looked at properties for the first time this week.
“It’s been really fun so far!” Spelling told PEOPLE. “But we’re going to decorate the B&B modern, so I’m going to sell all the Shabby Chic-style furniture and accessories I’ve collected over the years.”
However, the outdated furnishings are not the only items up for sale. (This is the part that made me raise my eyebrows.) Spelling happily reported to the magazine that she is also getting rid of her “Beverly Hills, 90210” memorabilia, including signed scripts. Shoppers will also find vintage and new designer clothes, Spelling’s antique chintzware collection, artwork, and chandeliers.
As I mentioned earlier, all this sounds perfectly normal… for someone who lives in Alpena, Michigan, but Tori, come on… a garage sale? Why not follow the lead of other celebrities who hold auctions to make money off of their personal items? Wait a second, as I recall, Spelling did (kind of) go that route earlier this year when she put up 86 pieces of clothing on eBay. That sale was met with marginal success… guess we’ll have to see how much she can make with her yard sale. Though, I’m told that shoppers who frequent these types of sales are notorious for haggling… so I will be curious to see how well the actress makes out.
