How would you feel if bookies were quite literally taking odds on whether or not you would marry your current love interest? Well, maybe current isn’t exactly accurate, since Prince William and Kate Middleton have announced their agreement to split up.
While the decision appears to be mutual, apparently, Prince William got cold feet and decided he was a bit too young to marry any time soon. He is also said to be interested in establishing his military career before settling into marriage.
It’s not like Kate Middleton didn’t know what she was getting into, and that her personal life and love life would be detailed for the world to review, but still, bets? I can’t help but feel for her. Would you be offended if people were making bets on whether or not you would get married? I think it would bother me.
Apparently, there are other women in the running. Bets are also being taken on other young women that the Prince seemed to have eyes for at various times. It seems rather demeaning to me to take odds on which woman will “win the race” to marry a prince, as if they were competing in a sporting event or horse race. However, there is presumably a lot of money to be made from such betting, so it isn’t likely to stop any time soon simply because it feels “icky” to some.
Kate Middleton still seems to be the odds on favorite, a 6-1 bet although other contenders may not be far behind. While many people believe she and the Prince will get back together, others either don’t believe Will is ready, or feel he will choose another young woman. I guess time will tell.
You know, when I learn about things like this I find myself thinking, “I am really glad I’m not famous.”
