Celebrity Mom Speaks Out About Autistic Son

The term “shrinking violet” has never been used to describe actress Jenny McCarthy… and that may be a good thing. If nothing else it certainly helps when she wants to get her message across.

These days it’s not just how McCarthy is getting her message across, but rather, the subject matter itself that’s making headlines.

This morning the actress and former Playboy playmate revealed on ABC’s “The View” (during her stint as a guest co-host) that she is the mother of an autistic son.

“I did want to acknowledge and confirm the fact that my son does, indeed, have an autism diagnosis,” McCarthy said.

Naturally, that statement segued into her next announcement:

“I just want moms … who have children out there with autism … to know that I am coming back in a few months with this book, and I am planning on using my big, giant, controversial mouth to blow the lid off a lot of things related to autism to give moms hope,” she told viewers. “It is so needed.”

Lest you think that this venture into the literary world is foreign territory for the 34-year-old, you should know that McCarthy is already the author of two bestsellers about pregnancy and motherhood. (That, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean that her newest title will share the same success, but she says she certainly will do her best to make sure it does.)

McCarthy told the ladies on “The View” that her 5-year-old son, Evan Joseph Asher (his father is McCarthy’s ex-husband director John Asher) lives with the disorder, but that he “has come a long way.”

She also added that she has come to understand why she was given an autistic child, she said, “I am willing to talk about it, and go deep with the emotional feelings.”

If you are interested in reading McCarthy’s book on the subject of autism, Amazon.com is taking pre-orders prior to its September release date. The book’s complete title is: Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism.

Oh, and in case you were wondering—yes, the actress is still dating actor and funny man Jim Carrey. But, no, she said they don’t have plans to get married.
