Celebrity Moms Adopt – Part 1

A few famous celebrity moms have recently adopted children. They are all at different stages in their life – one is married, one is in a same-sex relationship, and one is a single mother.

Actress Katherine Heigl said adoption was always a part of her family plan, even as a little girl. Maybe that’s because she came from a family that adopted. Heigl grew up with her sister Meg, who was adopted from Korea three years before Heigl was born. She has said in interviews that she always wanted a family that resembled the one in which she grew up.

Heigl and husband Josh Kelley, who married in 2007, adopted their first daughter, Nancy Leigh (nicknamed Naleigh), from South Korea in 2009. They adopted their second daughter, Adalaide Marie Hope, this past April, but the world didn’t find out about her until this past Mother’s Day when Heigl was photographed with her. Adalaide was born in Louisiana and both girls are special needs babies.

Of her second adoption, Heigl said, “You can’t help but be overcome with emotion. There were some tears and a lot of giddiness and joy.”

Another celebrity mom is celebrating both an adoption and a birth. Jillian Michaels, best known as one of the trainers on “The Biggest Loser,” is celebrating two bundles of joy at the same time.

Michaels and her partner of three years, Heidi Rhoades, welcomed daughter Lukensia, an adoptee from Haiti. Michaels admitted that as a gay couple, adopting wasn’t easy. She started the adoption process while still in her final season of “The Biggest Loser.” She told PEOPLE in May of last year that she had started the process of adoption and after submitting all the paperwork, it was just a “waiting game.” How did she know she was ready for motherhood? Michaels quoted the line from When Harry met Sally which said, “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start right now.”

But, it would take another year for Michaels to become a mother and then it would be times two. What about the other baby? You can learn about him in tomorrow’s blog.
