Is there anyone out there who doesn’t enjoy those sugary, chewy (not to mention, oh so cute) Peeps brand marshmallow candies? You know the ones shaped like bunnies and chicks that your brother would steal from your Easter basket then chomp their heads off to torture you (okay, maybe that ritual just occurred in my happy family)?
Regardless, Peeps are an institution. When I was a kid they only came in three colors: yellow, pink and white. These days even my toddler daughter knows that she can ask the Easter bunny for electric blue, hot pink, acid purple, and grassy green Peeps. Ah, Peeps. Easter is simply not Easter without them.
This, of course, brings me to the point of this blog. Just in time for Easter, Just Born, Incorporated, maker of the popular Peeps candies, has announced the results of their annual Celebrity Survey. (In previous blogs I’ve written about how some people have seen the likeness of the Blessed Virgin Mary in chocolate and the face of Jesus in potato chips—-the Peeps survey works in a similar fashion.)
According to the survey results, the male celebrity most resembling Peeps either in physique, colorful attire, or sweet nature/personality is Will Ferrell. The actor scored 22% of the votes followed by Johnny Depp, Jamie Foxx, and then Justin Timberlake.
When Americans were asked what female public person or celebrity most resembles a Peep, respondents answered with the following: In first place–actress/musician Jessica Simpson (could it be her nose?) followed by Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres, and then Rosie O’Donnell (I wonder if having a talk show is a prerequisite).
When candy makers asked what male public person or celebrity is most in need of Peeps, respondents overwhelming voted for President Bush (he got nearly 26% of the votes). While Donald Trump and curmudgeonly “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell rounded out the top three.
As for what female public person or celebrity should consider sinking her teeth into a fluffy blue marshmallow chick, Britney Spears won with more than 40% of the votes. Hillary Clinton was a distant second followed by Paula Abdul.
