There must be something in the water in Hollywood as several celebrity separations were announced this week.
Larry King filed for divorce from wife Shawn on Wednesday. By now, the 76-year-old talk show host should be used to the paperwork – Shawn was his seventh wife. The two have been married for 12 1/2 years and have two children. Rumors of infidelity on Shawn’s part had been circulating for a while in the tabloids.
But, is the marriage really over? TMZ reported that King and Shawn were seen together at their son’s baseball game. Could a reconciliation be in the works? King’s lawyer, Dennis Wasser, told PEOPLE that he would bet the show of togetherness was merely for their children.
According to a source, Mel Gibson has separated from his baby-mama, Oksana Grigorieva. The couple, who have a five month old daughter, have “drifted apart,” the source told PEOPLE, but they are “still friends and they’ll both raise [their daughter] together.”
Mel and wife Robin filed for divorce in April 2009 and surely that divorce, which is still ongoing, will cost Gibson a pretty penny. What will this separation cost him? One attorney, Steven Knowles, thinks that while Grigorieva cannot get alimony because the two were never married, she will probably receive around $12,000-$15,000 a month for child support.
Singer Melissa Etheridge has seen a second long-term relationship end. Just this past week, Etheridge and actress Tammy Lynn Michaels announced their separation after almost 9 years together. Etheridge’s rep released a statement which read “Melissa and Tammy Etheridge are saddened to announce that they are now separated. We ask for consideration and respect for our family as we go through this difficult period.”
Etheridge and Julie Cypher, former wife of Lou Diamond Phillips, were in a ten year relationship which produced two children, fathered by singer David Crosby, who donated the sperm.
Those two separated in 2000 and in 2003, Etheridge announced her engagement to Michaels. The two were married September 2003 and went through Etheridge’s 2004 breast cancer diagnosis together. Michaels became pregnant with the couple’s twins, Miller and Johnnie, in 2006.
