Celebrity Tidbits: A Supportive Husband (!) and A Supportive Friend (?)

A SUPPORTIVE HUSBAND!

Denzel Washington won an Oscar as best actor for his role as a rogue cop in the 2001 film Training, but I think he should also get an award for his role as a supportive husband. The actor is going public in an effort to encourage his wife of 23 years to come out of retirement and resume her singing career.

Washington’s wife, singer Pauletta Pearson, gave up her career as a Broadway actress and singer to marry Washington and raise their four children. Now Washington is trying desperately to persuade his “better half” to return to her roots. The actor put his plan into motion at a special 45th birthday party he recently threw for Pearson, when he pushed her onstage to sing one of her favorite songs, the Roberta Flack ballad “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.”

Washington told reporters, “She wouldn’t (sing) but the whole time I had Roberta Flack hiding in the hallway and she started singing it. Pauletta was floored.”

As for why Wahington is dead set on getting his wife back in the spotlight, the actor said: “I don’t think she should sit around the house waiting for me. I respect the sacrifices she’s made. I want her to do her thing.”

A SUPPORTIVE FRIEND?

Much has been made of the influence Paris Hilton is having on her new BFF, Britney Spears. The two have been photographed (extensively) partying until 6 a.m., not wearing underwear, and stumbling around L.A. together. Last week Spears spoke out about her post-divorce filing partying ways and now Hilton is making headlines with her own take on the situation.

Hilton is lashing out at critics who have been “raking Brtiney through the mud” insisting her best-friend- forever can party and still be a good mother. While others question the time Spears dedicates to her one-year-old son Sean Preston and three-month-old Jayden James, Hilton defends her friend’s actions on her MySpace.com page. Hilton writes: “For people to call out her (Britney) parenting skills on behalf of her partying ethics is appalling. Britney loves her kids to death, and I know for a fact that it truly hurts her when she sees these cruel things being written about her. She goes home every night to her babies and partying has not come in the way of her parenting.”

The only problem: according to several members of the paparazzi, dozens of pictures have been taken of Britney returning home just before sunrise, which doesn’t exactly constitute as “night” in most people’s books.

Hilton goes on to write: “There are thousands of mothers out there who like to go out and have a good time. But, you do not see people out there calling them ‘bad parents.’ She’s (Britney) young, and if she wants to go out and have some fun, let her. Just because she does these things does not mean she doesn’t care about her children. For the sake of Britney and her kids, be kind.”

YIKES! I should mention that these are sentiments made by someone who recently told Barabara Walters that she would like to be a mother in the next couple of years. I shudder at the thought.
