If you’ve read any of my blogs, you know I love a good celebrity train wreck. Yet, at the same time, I remain mostly an optimist. Yes, I am begrudgingly happy Britney Spears seems to be back on track. Begrudgingly because I honestly don’t think the poor thing has had a good single since “Oops!…I Did It Again.” Yes, I am begrudgingly hoping for a miracle in that Lindsay Lohan can get her act together. Begrudgingly because I’ve never actually seen one of her movies and as annoying as she is at this moment, from what I’ve heard, she was talented at one time. And I was genuinely saddened by the recent loss of Amy Winehouse to what surely must have been drugs or alcohol.
Right now, the train wreck du jour seems to be 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchinson and his new bride. For me at least, Hutchinson is most famous for his role as the deliciously despicable Percy Wetmore from The Green Mile. But, Hutchinson also has over 40 more credit to his name including appearing most recently on “Lost,” “24,” and “Lie to Me.”
A Hollywood actor taking a bride is no big deal, right? Well, this one is because Hutchinson is 35 years older than his new wife Courtney Stodden. For those that are as bad at math as I am, that means Stodden is 16-years-old.
While you try to wrap your mind around that, let me just tell you, it only gets weirder from here. Stodden’s mother, Krista and father Alex (who at 47 is four years younger than his son-in-law), approved of the marriage, which took place in Las Vegas earlier this May.
This whole thing has been total fodder for the press. I loved Anderson Cooper’s Ricidulist that included comments on this marriage but other shows such as “The View” and “The Joy Behar Show have also taken their shots at it.”
So what can one make of this whole thing? First, it is just out and out odd. If you watch the Anderson Cooper video linked above, you will learn that Stodden, who met Hutchinson online before he knew her age, is a budding singer. Hum. And, she makes really, really odd facial expressions, like she is trying to act like what she thinks a Playmate is. Oh yeah, and although she is 16, a Christian, and claims to have saved herself for marriage, she dresses like a Playmate too.
Hutchinson even goes as far as to say he and Stodden told her parents that if they didn’t approve they would show respect and back off on the relationship. And they have used this marriage to make the rounds, seemingly talking to any media outlet that will listen.
What do you think about this May-December relationship? Think it will last much past him not being able to land her a recording deal?
