Celebrity Updates: Maria and Dave

No matter what happens with her husband’s political career don’t expect Maria Shriver to return to TV news.

Mrs. Arnold Schwarzenegger says she has Anna Nicole Smith to thank for that decision.

Shriver made the announcement about her career earlier this week during the annual California Governor and First Lady’s Conference on Women.

You’ll recall Shriver took an extended leave from her job at NBC News when her husband ran for California governor in 2003. After he was elected, Shriver made two appearances as an anchor for “Dateline NBC.” A few months later she told her bosses that she could no longer juggle her work as a journalist with her duties as California’s first lady and parted ways with the network.

Frankly, I never expected Shriver to return to TV. Did you? She’s the wife of California’s governor, mom to four children and a member of one of the most prominent families in America—-the Kennedy’s. How do you carry that load and still find time to chase down stories for a weekly news show?

Full plate aside, Shriver says the real reason she chose not to resume her TV news career was because she couldn’t stomach watching the media circus surrounding Anna Nicole Smith’s accidental drug overdose death last February.

“It was then that I knew that the TV news business had changed and so had I,” Shriver said. “I called NBC News and told them I’m not coming back.”

One celebrity who says he’s keeping his day job is Dave Matthews.

The 40-year-old award-winning singer and the rest of his band just made the day of about 30,000 college students.

Cadets at the U.S. Military Academy learned today that the Dave Matthews Band will perform two free shows for them next month.

Thousands of cadets at the storied Hudson Valley academy beat out Air Force, Navy, and more than 100 other colleges in the World’s Loudest Pep Rally contest and received the chance to rock with the world-famous band.

The West Point cadets won the contest by submitting the most text messages and videos to AT&T’s website.

Hmmm… now we know what those cadets are doing with their free time.
