Celebrity Updates: Nicole Engaged?

Funny, I thought she has been engaged for a while. Silly me. I guess I thought that Joel Madden had asked Nicole Richie for her hand in marriage the day he found out she was pregnant with his child… but, apparently not.

According to numerous reports, the Good Charlotte singer proposed to his baby’s mama on Thursday. The quasi-announcement came last night after Madden and his band played a gig in Virginia. As Madden was walking off stage a local radio deejay announced to the crowd: “He got engaged yesterday. Congratulations, Joel!”

Upon hearing the cheers from the crowd Madden reportedly glanced back over his shoulder, but was otherwise unresponsive as he jogged to a nearby exit.

PEOPLE magazine is reporting the radio deejay offered his congratulations to Madden earlier in the night when he heard from “good sources” that the singer had proposed to Richie the night before. “He said, ‘Thank you so much,'” recalled the deejay.

Concertgoers said they didn’t see Richie at the event, though the couple (fresh off their sit down interview with Diane Sawyer) was photographed touring Washington, D.C. earlier in the day.

This recent turn of events comes just a day after talk show host Regis Philbin confronted Madden on live, national television.

Philbin pressed Madden about his personal life during his appearance on “Live with Regis and Kelly,” asking if he had something special in store for Richie.

“You’re going to present her, maybe, with – did I hear the right thing, or should I not even talk about this?” said Philbin.

“Uh, what?” questioned Madden.

“A little ring, or something,” said Philbin.

“I was hoping it would be a surprise, but now –” answered Madden.

Madden’s reaction flustered Philbin who quickly turned to the singer’s identical twin (and the band’s lead guitarist), Benji and asked him about his love life.

So, now I guess it’s not a matter of if they are getting married, but when they’ll be tying the knot… and where.
