Who can blame them?
It’s official; actor Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly have filed a lawsuit against the makers of heparin, the blood thinner that was inadvertently administered to their newborns in massive (and potentially deadly) doses.
According to news reports, the Quaid’s filed a product liability lawsuit in Chicago and are seeking roughly $50,000 in damages. The suit claims the drug manufacturer, which is based in Illinois, was “negligent in packaging different doses of the product in similar vials with blue backgrounds.” The lawsuit further claims the company knew of previous dosage mix-ups yet failed to recall shipments of the drug or properly warn hospitals of the dangers even after three Indianapolis infants died from overdoses last year.
The Quaid’s children, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, were born November 8th and were readmitted to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles when one of the twins was diagnosed with a staph infection. While at the hospital both babies were given 1,000 times the recommended does of heparin on November 18th.
The twins “suffered and will continue to suffer injuries” from the accident, the suit alleges.
Not to be petty, but $50,000??? You might be thinking I missed a few zeros? I didn’t.
I realize no one can put a price tag on life (let alone the lives of two newborn “miracle” children), but I don’t see how attorneys came up with 50 grand for compensation? The emotional trauma alone has got to be worth at least somewhere in the seven digits.
It’s true; the Quaid’s are millionaires and perhaps their goal is to send a message to the drug manufacturer in ways that don’t involve dollar signs. Or, perhaps they are waiting to slap a multi-million dollar lawsuit on Cedars Sinai Medical Center (as Lisa duly noted in a previous comment: “The Quaid’s should own that hospital once the kids recover.”) Whatever the reason I hope the Quaid’s are awarded anything and everything they ask for.
Granted, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that all they want is their children to fully recover, but still… $50,000? Come on.
