Change of Heart

One of my favorite chapters in the Book of Mormon is Alma 5. I love the message that Alma teaches the people of Zarahemla about having Christ’s image in your countenance. He asks questions about whether your actions reflect your beliefs. He speaks about the change of heart that comes with true conversion. It always causes me to sit back and look at where I am spiritually at that moment.

In verse 26 Alma says “And now . . . if you have experienced a change of heart, and if you have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?” This question is very poignant. It is so easy to brush aside our testimonies, because we know that we believe and have found redemption through the Atonement. We may neglect our relationship with our Savior, and find ourselves falling away.

If this is the case, it is important to draw close to the Lord again. One of the best ways to improve your relationship with the Savior is to have daily scripture study and personal prayer. If you are struggling with feeling the Spirit in your life or home, and you are studying the scriptures, you may need to examine whether or not you are just reading or really studying. You may also look at how personal your prayer really is. Do you simply rush through the same rote words every day, or do you take time to talk to your Heavenly Father?

It is also important to apply the things you learn from the scriptures into your daily life. Once you study and have learned the truth, it is important to apply that truth to your life. This will help you gain a testimony of the truth and help you to draw closer to the Savior. These things are very important in your relationship with the Lord. You may also benefit from visiting the temple again.
