Changes in Education

This is my first post in the Education area and I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of the things I have learned along the way of raising two, now adult children. Previously I’ve been writing in Marriage and Christian blogs, and will continue to do that, but also writing some blogs for Education, Food and Home.

Education has changed a lot since I was young. Back then it was a case of, ‘sit down, don’t interrupt, be quiet and do your work.’

Of course there were some of us still managed to get into regular trouble for talking too much in class. These days children are encouraged to talk. A lot of education is very interactive. Go into any classroom, as my husband and I do once a week and you will hear chatter as children work at their projects and interaction throughout the lesson with the teacher.

Gone are the blackboards, chalk and chalk dust that used to permeate our days. If you’re as old as me, you’ll remember the screech like fingernails on a blackboard. Just the thought still sends shivers. Now these items have been replaced by whiteboards and then smart boards.

I’d like this blog to be interactive too. So I’d like to hear from you about the topics you’d like to see covered. Because I live in Australia, sometimes my slant on things might be a little different, but other times it will be much the same. And I won’t be on my own, as Kyle will also being writing for this blog, so I suspect you will get more than one point of view on some issues.

While some things in education change with the times, other things don’t change. Education of your child shouldn’t be left completely to the schools and to teachers.

So I’m planning to start my next blog by telling you the most important thing you as a parent can do for your child’s education.

Please join me next Monday for that vital piece of information, which could set the key to your child’s success or lack of it at school and beyond.
