Expecting a little one? Changing tables are almost a necessity. They make things so convenient for changing diapers, applying baby lotion after a bath, or just getting a baby dressed. But if you want to save some some on this item, you’ll want to check out this article!
There a couple of ways to save money on a changing table. Of course you can buy a used changing table at a yard sale or thrift store, but there are some money saving ways to get a new changing table, too.
Here is what we did, back when I was expecting our oldest, and so far, it has lasted through him plus two others. You may remember me speaking a little bit about it in an earlier article. Instead of buying a changing table, we invested in a nice six-drawer wooden dresser that we knew would grow as he did. On top of the dresser, we placed a baby changing pad that we purchased. The pad came with snaps that could be attached to the dresser with screws to keep it secure, as well as straps to secure the baby. When you are done with baby changing, just remove the changing pad. You’ll still have your dresser to use.
We skipped on purchasing the terry cloth covers. They are an extra expense, they get soiled easily and make clean up more difficult. If you want some padding, you can always lay a towel down on top, but I never found a need for it.
Another idea for a new changing table is to purchase a workbench kit at your local home improvement store. They come in oak for stability and sturdiness. As you put the workbench together, layer foam and a pretty fabric of your choice on the top. Staple the fabric to the underside of the top of the bench. You can also add straps for safety. The workbench will have two handy shelves below for your diapers and supplies. At the end of baby changing, you can repurpose your “changing table” to a workbench.
