Every once in a while, while I am taking care of my home, I think of those home gurus and all of their advice. Some of it is very good: “Only surround yourself with the things that add meaning to your life,” and some of it is bad: “Bathrooms should be cleaned three times a day.” Ack, really?
Still those home gurus have done a lot to help us with turning our houses into homes. Which home guru do you most relate to?
Peter Walsh
Super clutter organizer Peter Walsh wants people to “live rich and full lives without drowning in their stuff.” He had regular appearances on the TLC show “Clean Sweep” and has his own shows on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Walsh has created videos, books and even mobile apps to help us clear our home and our heads of all of the unimportant stuff.
Ultimate lesson from this home guru: We can’t control the future by holding on to the clutter of the past.
Martha Stewart
We can’t forget Martha, can we? She inspired a whole generation of homemakers and homeowners to get to the craft store and start making things out of candle wax, lint and antique lace. For those of us who are not so talented and have been having trouble keeping up, Martha has a whole line of ready to assemble crafts that can be purchased at craft stores.
Ultimate lesson from this home guru: You deserve a beautiful space, even if you have to make it yourself.
Cheryl Mendelson
You may have never heard of Cheryl Mendelson, but her book Home Comforts is considered the bible of homemaking, a massive guide to everything about caring for your home, from safety, to record keeping to daily chores. More of a text book than a tips book, Mendelson provides the manual that so many of us need.
Ultimate lesson from this home guru: Taking care of your home needs to be a satisfying experience.
