Charitable Celebs Lending a Hand

Alec Baldwin is at it again.

This time the outspoken actor (also known as an “enthusiastic” Democrat who likes to comment on political matters) is taking on New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. More specifically the mayor’s homelessness policies.

The “30 Rock” star just lent his voice to a public service announcement released by the Coalition for the Homeless, a charity that takes issue with Bloomberg’s follow-through on a 2004 pledge to slash the number of homeless people in New York.

In the PSA, Baldwin’s voice can be heard over video footage of street dwellers. Baldwin starts by saying, “Over 40,000 New Yorkers will go to sleep homeless tonight.” He then goes on to blast Bloomberg’s promise to help those who call the streets their home.

The city Department of Homeless Services says the PSA is a cheap shot and the number of homeless people on Manhattan streets and in shelters is shrinking. The Coalition for the Homeless disputes this.

The spot will be televised on various networks throughout the New York area.

Moving on…

Well here’s a shocker… Paris Hilton is actually making good on her promise to become a better person.

According to reports, the 27-year-old wannabe actress/singer recently made an “extremely generous” donation toward the construction of a medical building at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“The children I have met through my involvement with Children’s Hospital have truly touched my heart,” Hilton said in a statement. “I am proud to make a donation and lend my name to the fundraising effort to help children who are facing terribly serious illnesses.”

You’ll recall the hotel heiress turned jailbird pledged to turn her life around after spending about 23 days in jail last year for violating probation on alcohol-related reckless driving charges. Upon being released from jail Hilton told CNN’s Larry King the experience caused her to re-evaluate the role partying played in her life. She then promised to “help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.”

The new addition to the Children’s Hospital is scheduled to open in 2010.
