Don’t let the slumping economy put a damper on your Halloween festivities. Just because you don’t have $50 to shell out for an elaborately designed costume from the Halloween store, doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of the haunted holiday.
Simply gather materials from around your home and get your creative juices flowing to make the following cute and comfortable Halloween costumes:
Bunny: Find a pink, brown or white sweatsuit and add a large pom-pom to the backside. For the ears, simply glue construction paper to a plastic headband.
Skunk: Use a black sweatsuit and add a strip of white material down the back.
Puppy: Use a brown sweatsuit (or tan or white) and either paint or pin paper spots on the material. You can make puppy ears from construction paper and bobby pin them to your child’s hair or attach them directly to a hooded sweatshirt. The tail can be made from an old sock or extra material.
Kitten: Let your child choose a gold, brown, tan, white or black sweatsuit and help her embellish it with stripes or spots. Make kitty ears from construction paper and attach them to a headband or bobby pin them to your child’s hair. Sew a small tail, and then pin it on the backside of the sweatpants.
Turtle: Find a green sweatsuit, and then get a piece of large green poster board and attach it to your son or daughter’s back. Remove and cut the poster board into a large oval, and then make random marks to resemble a turtle shell. Paint the shell, and then reattach it to your child’s back.
Lady Bug: Use a black sweatsuit and a pair of black shoes for the base. Then, get a large piece of poster board or cardboard and cut out an oval shape that’s large enough to cover your child’s back. Paint it red with black dots. Next, staple black elastic pieces (in a loop) onto the board—-these are your child’s armholes. For the antenna, use black pipe cleaners and pom-poms and attach them to the end of a black headband.
