When spring rolls around, it seems as though there is one birthday after another at my house, all the way through to the holidays. Each birthday usually requires cake, and all of those cakes can add up. I remember the year when my daughter convinced my husband to get a store bought and created Princess cake, complete with the princess characters. Since it was offered in the bakery section of the grocery store, he didn’t thin much of it. When he picked it up on the day, he was surprised to find that it came with a $50 cost. Youch.
We learned our lesson.
Here are some more economical ways to have your cake and eat it too, all without the expensive cost.
Go Online
The Internet is a wealth of ideas and instruction for great cakes, from castles to characters. Most require baking simple shapes, such as a sheet cake or small round cakes, assembling them in a certain way and then frosting the whole thing over.
You can make a great theme cake and customize it as you like. Use boxed cake mix and canned frosting to make things easier. Then decorate it.
Go Around the House
Want to transform a generic and cheap sheet cake into a custom themed cake? Just take a look at items that you might already have around the house and add them to the cake. For example, to create a racetrack cake, I simply created a race path in frosting and added some toy cars, toy signs, etc.
This might work well for pirate themed cakes, princess themed cakes, or practically any themed cake. See what you have on hand, wash it throughly and add it to transform your cake.
Go to the Cupcake
Cupcakes are still in demand. Bake a bunch and then use them to serve two functions: first as a craft activity at the party when you allow the guests to decorate them and secondly as the desert.
