Be prepared, because ham is going on sale all over the place this week. Take advantage of this to eat cheaply for months.
Late last week we purchased two store brand hams. In addition to getting them pretty cheap, we also got an extra $5 off the purchase thanks to printing out an Internet printable coupon for any meat purchase at the store. In total, we spent $15 for two large hams that would normally cost about $30 a piece.
Yesterday, we cooked one of the hams. We enjoyed ham for dinner, and had plenty of leftovers. I kept a few slices asides to use as lunch for my husband’s lunches this week, saving us the cost of both eating out and the cost of expensive deli ham.
The rest of the ham I cubed up and placed in sandwich baggies in both one cup and two cup portions. I then added the baggies to a large freezer bag and frozen the whole thing. Because everything is pre-portioned, I can simply take out the amount I need for a recipe, such as a casserole, omelets, mac & cheese with ham, frittata, a topping for pizza, etc.
The second ham will be cooked in the middle to the end of the week. Once again, we will enjoy a ham dinner (ham twice a week is no problem for my family). The remaining ham will be made a ham salad for lunches, with the rest being crafted into various freezer meals.
If the prices are just as good this week as they were last week, I’ll probably pick up at least one more ham (our store had a limit of two per bonus card last week).
Cooking like this and taking advantage of seasonal deals is a great way to save money, because you can get your food at the lowest prices. Having a supply of ingredients and meals in the freezer also helps you save when it helps you avoid the temptation of eating out or of buying convenience meal kits.
