You may not know this, but I am originally from New York.
This past weekend, my family and I drove down to attend my father’s birthday party in the basement of my old church. We stayed overnight in a lovely little hotel in nearby Brooklyn that is off the beaten path, but close to everything and very reasonable. It was five minutes away from the party and probably 10 from Manhattan. I’ll have to post more about how to find such inexpensive accommodations in my next post.
The next day, I knew that I wanted to do just a bit of shopping in New York. While going to some of the big famous stores would be lovely, my goal was more to stock up on some cheap kids clothing. New York is a great place to pick up some inexpensive clothing, if you know where to look.
So again, we were in Brooklyn at a little variety shop, and I did some hunting, while my husband, my father and my kids found a parking space, not easy in the city, even on a Sunday.
There were girls’ silkscreen t-shirts for a dollar a piece, so I got a couple of those. Boys heavy name brand sweats shirts at two for $5 and Disney character dresses for less than $4 a piece. They went in my basket. I also picked up two Champion under-armor-type shirts for my daughter to use ice skating for just a couple of bucks, packages of boys white t-shirts, and one of those character hats (an akita dog) for my youngest who loves all things stuffed and dog-related. He has been sleeping with the hat ever since.
My father popped in the store and added a bag of snickers candy, some boxer shorts and some kitchen gadgets.
All of that stuff wound up costing me less than $40, even with the NYC tax. Had I bought the equivalent, at lets say Target, here in Pennsylvania, I would have easily spent twice or three times as much.
