When my husband was spending $21 a week on his containers of iced tea, we knew we had a problem. And while he was watering that tea down to make it stretch a bit, it was still more than $80 a month just for the tea. So we made some changes to save money. I’ll share what we did regarding the tea, as well as some other strategies for saving money on beverages.
My husband had been buying prepared gallons of name brand “designer” tea. We did some hunting around and found that his preferred brand also makes tea bags. We purchased the tea bags, and then he experimented with the amount of sugar and lemon juice until he got the taste just right. It doesn’t take long to make up his own tea, and we save money.
You can mix up all sorts of beverages, from homemade lemonade to powdered drink mixes. Consider using less sugar in these drinks. Not only will that be healthier for you, but you’ll save money in the long run.
For myself, I mostly drink water. Water is absolutely free from the tap. If you don’t like the taste of your tap water, consider adding an inexpensive filter to the faucet or the water dispenser. You can also buy one of those filtering pitchers. When we are heading out on errands or an adventure I load up the reusable water bottles for the trip. This prevents us from having to buy beverages or even bring prepackaged bottled water.
Consider buying fruit juice concentrate to make up batches of orange juice, apple juice or grape juice. Look for 100 percent juice instead of “ade” or “cocktail.” You will still get the lowest price per ounce on your juice this way.
Do you love coffee? Try canned evaporated milk or powdered milk for cheap “cream” alternatives.
