Footprints show us where we’ve been… but they can also help point you in the right direction going forward. Your foot shape can show you the way to the right kind of shoe to reduce foot pain and body strain.
So how do you figure out your foot shape? It’s quick and easy!
- Take off your shoes and socks.
- Wet the bottom of your foot.
- Step onto a fresh, clean piece of paper.
- Check out the imprint you’ve made.
You have a high arch if the imprint has only a narrow band connecting the ball of the foot with the heel. You have a normal arch if the imprint has a wide band connecting the ball of the foot with the heel — but a definite arch is visible. You have a low arch (pretty flat, even) if you leave nearly a complete foot print on the paper.
If you have high arches, you may need cushioning — especially for sneakers and when you’re very active. A person with high arches may experience more shock transmission from the feet and into the legs. Look for sneakers and other shoes with extra cushioning, or think about adding a cushioning pad to existing shoes. A person with low or no arches may also have problems with shock absorption. If you have low arches, you want to look for shoes with plenty of support and cushioning.
If you have a normal arch, it doesn’t mean you wouldn’t benefit from some cushioning and support from your shoes! Most people spend a lot of time on their feet every day — and if your feet aren’t happy, the rest of your body isn’t going to feel very good, either. There are plenty of shoes out there that help you find a balance between comfort and fashion.
