Chemotherapy: Your Support System

Undergoing chemotherapy can be an emotional strain, as well as a physical strain. Try to keep in mind that you have many different people in your support system!

Your doctors, nurses, and other health professionals. These people are here to answer your questions about your cancer treatments. Let them know if you feel worried or depressed, or if you are experiencing other emotional or physical changes.

Counseling professionals can help you understand and deal with your feelings. Cancer and chemotherapy can leave you feeling hopeless, depressed, or worthless. Your doctor may be able to recommend a counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist, or social worker who is trained to help cancer patients. Depending on your preferences and needs, your favorite clergyman or clergywoman can fall into this category.

Your friends and family are potentially your greatest source of support and your greatest difficulty. Many people do not understand cancer, and may be uncomfortable or afraid. They may not know what to do to help you, or may fear upsetting you by saying the wrong thing. Talk openly to your friends and family, to help them understand what you’re going through, and what you need from them. Allowing others to help you will let them feel less helpless. It may not be easy to accept help, but letting others help will help them deal with your illness.

Support groups of people who have gone through the same thing can be a great resource. The people in the group can be a valuable resource about life with cancer and chemotherapy. You may be able to talk about thoughts and feelings with your support group, because they understand what you are going through like no one else can.

The National Cancer Institute can help you find support programs, get financial assistance, counseling advice, and more. Call 1-800-4 CANCER or visit the Cancer Information Service.
