Chicago on a Shoestring

This is it. The countdown to my favorite event of the summer is on and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Soon I will enjoy an entire day where I don’t count a single calorie or contemplate what a combination of deep-fried pickles, Pad Thai, a Flintstones-sized BBQ turkey leg, alligator nuggets, and chocolate-dipped strawberry cheesecake on a stick will do to my digestive tract.

If you too dream of experiencing the epicurean delight, also known as The Taste of Chicago, but your budget is far smaller than your appetite, check out the following Windy City travel deals:

A Taste of the Taste

Southwest Airlines Vacations is currently offering an outstanding deal to foodies who want to chow down at this year’s Taste. For $439 per person you’ll receive round-trip airfare from Nashville (additional cities are available by clicking here), three nights at the award-winning Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago and $50 off a two-day or more Go Chicago Card, which covers tours of the city, entrance to museums, and discounted dining. Note that the package is only good during the 10-day food festival, held June 27-July 6 this year.

Shop Michigan Avenue

If you prefer to load up your closet rather than your waistline you might consider taking advantage of this next travel deal offered by W Chicago-Lakeshore. The “Escape to Michigan Avenue” package includes a night at the ultra swanky W Chicago Lakeshore hotel, a $50 Magnificent Mile gift certificate per room reservation, valid at any business that’s a member of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, a 30-minute carriage ride for up to four people and two cocktails at the hotel’s penthouse bar all for just $279 per room per night. The offer is good through September 1, 2008.

Architecture Adventure

Architecture buffs know that Chicago is a premiere destination to view awe-inspiring designs. Right now the InterContinental Chicago is offering a “Chicago Architecture Adventure” from $289 per room per night. The deal includes a one-night stay at the InterContinental, a private iPod audio tour of the landmark hotel, and two Chicago architecture tours for two. The package allows you to choose from the Architecture River Cruise, Downtown Deco, Modern Skyscrapers, and others led by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. A concierge will call you to set up your personal adventure, saving you the time and money (up to $60) of doing it yourself. The deal is good through September 1, 2008.
