Children Teach Us to Appreciate

Yesterday, for family home evening, we decided to talk about the earth, and how it was created. This is a simple topic for our 4 year old. I asked her what she knew about the earth. She said, that she knew that it, “turns, and circles around the sun, and that half of it is in the daytime, and half is in the night time” I was amazed at how much she already knew. I then asked her, “Do you know who created the earth?” She said, “Jesus”.

Children do not take things for granted. Every day is a new experience full of learning. They ask lots of questions, and notice the simple things in life, like “Why is the sky blue?”, and “What makes a rainbow?” We can learn a lot from children, and I’m realizing that more and more every day as I am blessed to have two of my own that both shock and amaze me with their knowledge, faith, and trust in the world around them.

As adults, we are used to the blue skies and we have seen many rainbows in our lifetime. So, we start to take those thing for granted. On a beautiful, crisp, clear day, we may not think that much about the earth and all of its beauty. We may not stop to smell the roses. Today, I was in a hurry to run into the grocery store and fill a prescription for my youngest who has a double ear infection. As we were walking out the door, I stopped, realizing my two little ones were no longer following me. As I turned around, I realized that they had stopped to smell all the flowers in a beautiful easter display by the front door. They were “oohing and aahing” over each color and variety. I had hardly noticed them when we walked in, but my children, 4 and 2 saw the beauty right away. And, more importantly, they took full advantage of the moment to stop and smell the flowers.

Look around you today like you are a child experiencing the day. It might just bring you an added excitement, wonder, and appreciation for the world that you had forgotten.
