Winter is in full swing and so that makes for indoor recess a lot of times with my children. When they come home, the first thing they want to do is turn on the television or sit in front of a computer or video game. Oh how I miss those carefree days of summer when they were constantly outside riding bikes, jumping on the trampoline or taking a swim. Even in fall and spring they were outside running around. But now we are stuck inside and they are losing the motivation to do anything physical.
Since I started my treadmill last month, my children have seen a difference in their mom. They see that I have a lot more energy and truth be told, am not as easily agitated. My mood is so much better. I didn’t even have to say anything but not that long ago my 12 year old daughter began walking on the treadmill. I try to not say much about those things because sometimes it comes across as an attack—it’s the age thing. But at any rate it has been neat to see her taking the time to get in some exercise.
I think our children would benefit from hearing mom and dad encourage exercise. I keep hearing about the Wii Fit and since we own the Wii system I am seriously thinking of getting it. However even when we play Wii baseball, golf, tennis or bowling we are getting some form of exercise. Hey, it’s better than nothing.
It’s easy to let these cold dreary days pass by and not give much thought to the need for exercise. Our children need to understand, however, the value in fitness and that it’s important no matter the season. So if you have been zapped of energy, your children are nothing more than couch potatoes, get out there and find some way to squeeze in some fitness into your day. Break out the fitness video game, race through the house, turn up the music and dance away. There are so many fun, creative ways to bring fitness into the home. Get your children off their butts and up and moving.
