Choosing a Great Wedding Photographer Part 3

You’re getting closer to knowing all the little things that are important in choosing a great wedding photographer. There are just a few more things I think are important, that I wanted to share.

When you’re looking at a photographer’s portfolio, notice what they do in correcting and finishing their photos. Do they have a tendency to make everything softer, change the hue, or do something that you don’t necessarily want in your photos? In looking at my photographer’s work, I noticed that she took great photos in certain places—such as places with strong architectural backgrounds and simple surroundings. This appealed to me, since I’m a modern kind of girl.

However, I also noticed that she had a tendency to turn many photos black-and-white while leaving the bouquet or other details in color. While this works for many people, it wasn’t want I was looking for. But when you talk before the photo shoot, make sure you mention these finishing touches and what you’d prefer. When I got my photos back, there were no half black-and-whites among the bunch because I had specifically mentioned what I liked and what I didn’t like.

The last thing I’m going to mention is to look at the photographer’s studio policies. If you’re getting married somewhere other than the photographer’s city, are there additional charges you’re going to pay for travel or fees for taking photos in a particular setting? These are great things to ask up front. Also, read through the contract they have and make sure you agree with (or are willing to live by) everything in the contract. You’ll also want to ask about delivery dates, when you can see the photos, and what to do if you do decide you want an add-on to the package.

Once you’ve chosen your photographer, your job is to relax, have fun in front of the camera, and let the joys of your wedding day take over. Good luck!
