Choosing a Pediatrician

While still pregnant, you need to start looking for a qualified pediatrician to care for your baby. Obviously, you want someone that will provide the best and most concise care possible. If you have no idea where to begin, you might ask any family members or friends if they know of anyone but if not, there are a number of resources where you can locate a great doctor in your area.

A reputable pediatrician will have the medical training, as well as the personal and professional interest in your baby. This individual can provide guidance to you even before the baby is born. Then after the birth of the baby, the pediatrician will be the sole medical caretaker, helping you with the development of a healthy child. The key however with any doctor is choosing one that you trust, one that will fit your specific needs and expectations. In other words, while medical training and experience should be at the top of your list, other factors such as personality, approach, and education should also be considered.

I recommend you talk to at least three qualified doctors before making your final decision. During the consultation period, which is generally free, you want to find out about the pediatrician’s qualifications and certifications. In addition, ask about after-hour emergency contact, type of care provided (baby or baby and mom), and so on. Then, you want to advise your baby’s pediatrician about any family history of problems or concerns to determine if he or she can properly address them.

Another consideration for choosing a pediatrician comes down to cost. Fortunately, insurance covers most of what you would need help with but sometimes there are special treatments that might be needed. Although you would not want cost to be the overall determining factor, it would play a role in your decision. Then, find out the hospitals the pediatrician serves since doctors are generally affiliated with just a few.

After visiting with several pediatricians, you should have a much better idea of who fits. Typically, parents use good, old-fashioned instinct as well. The doctor should meet the requirements medically speaking, while making you feel comfortable and at ease, especially if this is your first baby. If you have any concern whatsoever, you can check to see if the doctor has had any past problems by contacting the medical board.
