Choosing the Right Walling for You

Choosing the right walling for your space can be tough. The walls of your space influence your mood and say a lot about your sense of style and good taste. In fact, most people do not realize the impact that their walls have on their overall outlook until it is time to make a change (or until they read a book on Feng Shui!)

Here are three of the most popular walling types with a brief overview of what you can expect from each.

Wallpaper
Wallpaper is one of the most common types of wall coverings. It can be suited to match any taste or desire and can be changed quickly and easily. Wallpaper is easy to install and requires patience, scissors and a good eye for aesthetic. Most modern wallpapers come with the adhesive already on the back of the paper. All you need to do is to simply wet the adhesive and roll the paper evenly onto your wall.

If your wallpaper has patterns in it, do your best to line the patterns up along the seams of the paper so that it appears that the wallpaper does not stop. However, if you do not have the time or energy to line the wallpaper up, then you may want to purchase a wallpaper type with a pattern that does not need to be lined up exactly, such as a flower print versus a checker print.

Paint
Painting walls is perhaps the easiest, cheapest and most popular way to dress a wall. When you paint your wall, keep in mind that you will have to prepare the surface before you can begin work. To prepare the surface, you may need to fill in any holes using putty. You will also want to paint a base coat onto the wall.

The base coat, otherwise known as a primer, is a coat of paint that absorbs all other layers so that the layer of paint is even and sticks firmly to the wall. Paint at least two coats of the paint evenly on the wall to ensure that your paint looks suitably thick.

Many people enjoy painting with patterns, such as a faux finish or sponge painting. The pattern style of painting helps to add color, texture and interest to an otherwise flat wall.

Stucco
Many people also enjoy adding texture and interest to their walls by dressing them up in stucco. Stucco is a substance similar to cement. It comes in powder form that you mix with water and spread onto the wall in the same fashion that one would spread paint with a paintbrush. However, instead of using a paintbrush, you spread the thick mixture using a flat-edge scraper, which is available in the paint section of any hardware store.

The trick to creative stuccoing is not following a pattern. Create chaos in the texture of your wall with vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines that cover the entire wall.

No matter how you dress up your walls, keep in mind that they will influence your entire room. From helping you plan your color scheme to creating a mood and atmosphere, wall colors and textures are important to any home.
