Choosing Your Wedding Colors

When I was a little girl, I was absolutely insistent that I was going to have pink for my wedding color. Then I decided that lavender was really the way to go. Then I thought I’d do burgundy … but with some pink thrown in for good measure. By the time I was actually engaged, I’d been through so many colors of the rainbow, I had no idea what I wanted.

I was working in a floral shop at the time, and one day, a shipment came in of the most beautiful flower I’d ever seen. It was alstromeria, which is a small lily, and the coloration on this flower was incredible. It was peach blended into pink blended into yellow, and it took my breath away. (I wasn’t able to find the exact flower online, but this one is really close.) I’m not ordinarily a peach or a yellow girl, but I fell in love with this flower, and my wedding colors became peach and forest green.

wedding We all choose our wedding colors for different reasons. Sometimes we go with a color we’ve loved for years. Other times, we might go with the current trend. We might see what’s available in bridesmaids’ dresses and go from there. But whatever your method of selection, it’s a deeply personal decision, and one that only you can make.

My mother was a little unhappy that I went with peach and green. She was no way going to wear peach, and she hunted high and low for a green dress … apparently August isn’t the right time of year to buy forest green. So I could have done that a little more wisely, but hey, when the flowers are talking to you, what are you going to do?

As you consider your colors, you might take into consideration accent colors as well. If you’ve chosen shades of blue, but your new mother-in-law doesn’t like the way she looks in blue, you could throw in an accent color and ask her to wear that. You can bring out those accent colors in your flowers, or have one flower girl in the same shade as your mother-in-law so she’s not the only one.

You might want to take some pictures of your chosen colors and make sure they translate well. I’ve seen some wedding pictures where the colors appeared very garish, while I’m sure they were beautiful in person.
However you go about selecting your colors, make sure they are colors you love. You don’t want look back and feel a little sad that you didn’t go for the teal you really wanted. If you want to use forest green in August, go for it … I did, and I’m still very happily married. It did not ring a death knell on my special day.
