When a Christian begins a business or a non-profit ministry he must decide if his business is Christ Centered, a ministry or if he will be a Christian who serves in a secular field. Regardless of the choice the result should be to glorify God. I bring the distinction between the three because I know many who start a business and feel guilty for earning a profit or want to earn a profit or feel like they need to represent Christ even though they sell shower curtain rings so they end up selling “Jesus Shower Curtain Rings”.
“Money is an excellent gift of God if it is used excellently, answering the noblest needs of humanity.” -John Wesley
“Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.” -John Wesley
God brings the increase so if your business is blessed then praise the Lord and do not feel guilty. It is okay to make a profit. It is also okay to sell a secular product as long as you maintain your Christian identity. You need not try to fit in your Christian faith into your product as that may be dishonoring. I sincerely doubt “Mary Magdalene Nail Polish” will serve the Lord or bless your clients.
Christ Centered Business: A business which glorifies God, evangelizes, makes disciples and earns a profit. My definition of a business which is centered on Christ as opposed to a Christian owning a business is a business that furthers the work of Christ primarily. For instance, a business that sells Christian curriculum, Christian bookstore, or a business which sells evangelical materials. My business centers on teaching Godly character so I would consider that to also be a Christ Centered Business.
Ministry: Ministry is a service to God or to people in God’s name. As demonstrated by Jesus who came to serve not to be served. The word is derived from the Greek word diakoneo which means “to serve”. We normally do not associate profit with ministry. However, it is acceptable for a ministry to employ workers much like a pastor earns a salary. If you start a full time ministry it is expected that you receive a stipend for your living expenses. Ministry is not the avenue for someone who expects monetary wealth.
Christian Business Owner: A person who is saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ who honors the Lord in his business. The business could be an auto shop, bakery, or selling items for a company like Avon or Mary Kay. The business would also serve the Lord and evangelize and make a profit.
The common thread with all three is that one should see Christ first and your business second. Your clients, if you are a business, should know your stand on faith. God brings the increase so never compromise for profit. In the end that will dishonor God and your clients.
