The Christmas Homeschool

Before you can count the twelve days of Christmas it will be time to trim the tree and count eight tiny reindeer. Christmas is a busy time for all so many homeschoolers take time off in the month of December. Some take the entire month off. I find that the more time I take off the more chaotic my home gets. The kids need something to do and some structure in their day. For me, December is busy but if I took the entire month off I would go crazy. Here are some ideas to keep Christmas the focus, get your holiday planning done, and taking a homeschool break. Even if you do some studying you can take pressure off yourself by not having to worry about planning, grading, and school in general.

Christmas Business is Homeschool Business: Involve your child in making all the Christmas plans. Give each one a job to do as they are able. Make decorating a homeschool project and baking home economics. This may sound like we are just passing off ordinary chores and calling it school but I assure you that the ordinary will teach valuable lessons. Assign each child to bake recipe while the younger ones are helpers. The baker will learn valuable skills from following directions to getting along with her helper. Decorate your home with handmade arts and crafts. This will allow your little elves to be creative and put family as the focus on the holiday.

Christmas Unit Studies: Assign older students to read A Christmas Carol and report on it. Assign younger ones to study Christmas time around the world. You can then have all your students study Christmas in America and the true meaning of Christmas. If you are Christian then challenge your children to come up with ways to keep Christ in Christmas.

Allow this Christmas to be special because you planned and learned as a family.
