I’m a sucker for Christmas carols. Three of my favorites are ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel,’ ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘What Child is This?’ Mick’s favorite, as others mentioned in the forum, is ‘Silent Night.’ But, as Janet and others said there are so many great carols to choose from.
One of the reasons I particularly like ‘What Child is This?’ is because the birth and the death of Jesus are linked together which they should be. Too often it seems people want to enjoy and celebrate the Christmas story and the birth of Jesus as a baby but forget about the rest of His life, the reality of the cross and the agony He suffered for us. And after all, that’s why He came. That’s how He showed His love for you and me. He was more than a baby. He is the Lord and Savior.
Sometimes too, we can get caught up in all the other traditions, commercialism and hype that surround Christmas, the gifts, Santa, Christmas lights, Christmas trees and decorations, baking etc. Given the inactivity of the past weeks with my arm, I actually got around to cooking my Christmas cake yesterday. It’s gluten free because I am wheat and gluten free. It rose beautifully, which does not always happen with gluten free flours. Hopefully it tastes as good as last year’s cake did. I guess I’ll see when I cut it and take some to a friend’s place later this week.
Added to that, our Christmas cards have been posted. As well as the card, I usually include a letter which catches people we don’t see often up on what has happened throughout the year. I admit to using it as an opportunity to share our faith as we talk about what the Lord has been doing in our lives this year. This year Mick included a lovely photo on the letter of Jervis Bay. As soon as I figure out how the photo bit, I’ll l post it so you can all have a look at this beautiful piece of God’s creation.
