In our house, when we are decorating the tree and putting Christmas decorations up, it is usually to the accompaniment of Christmas Carols. Similarly when I am in the writing Christmas card stage or the wrapping present mode I like to have accompanying carols to listen to and to sing along with.
This year one of the special CDs that will be played in our house over Christmas is The Gift by Susan Boyle, a present given me by a dear friend.
Why play carols when I am doing these tasks? For one thing it helps put me in the Christmas mood and fills me with the Christmas spirit. I admit I love to sing carols. For another it lets our neighbors know exactly what Christmas is all about. Since it is summer and doors and windows are usually open, there is no way our next door neighbors won’t hear the music coming from our place. So in a way the carols send out their own message of Christmas to our neighbors.
Another fun thing to do is to get a group of like minded people and a couple of portable instruments like guitars, violins and flutes etc to go around the streets and sing Christmas carols to neighbors. Mick and I have done this in the past with a group. It has not only been a lot of fun, we have had very good response from people in the houses where we go. Many of the people in the houses came out to listen or even joined in the singing or added themselves to the group.
It’s a good opportunity to get the real message of Christmas out there so it does not get lost among the tinsels end Santa’s. Never underestimate the power of music to change hearts and lives and draw people to God, especially at Christmas.
