Christmas Cookie Alternatives

Somewhere around now, I start getting a little “cookied” out. The mixing, the rolling, the baking, the decorating start to become more of a chore than an enjoyment. Still, there are cookie exchanges, cookie gifts, holiday parties, etc., when cookies are required. or, are they? If you are getting fed up with cookies, try one of these alternatives.

Mini muffins

Get a few mini muffin pans and bake up some goodness. These tiny muffin bites are just the thing to take the place of cookies. They can still be popped in the mouth and enjoyed, and a multitude of varieties can be baked and assembled together on a tray or in a basket. Try chocolate chip and vanilla muffins, to still give this treat a cookie appeal.

Pretzel rods

This is the classic go to for class parties and fun celebrations, when you just don’t want to make another cookie. Also called celebration sticks, you simply dip the ends of pretzel rods into chocolate and then roll them into red and green sprinkles. If you want to make them a little more sophisticated, use fine colored sugar instead.

Whoopie Pies

Whoopie Pies seem to make their way into any cookie display you will find here in my part of Pennsylvania. I guess that is because they are very popular in the Amish community, not too far from where I live. Whoopie pies consist of a sort of cake sandwich, with sweet cream icing in the middle. I’ve seen these pies in all sorts of sizes, from the large to the finger bite size.

Assemblies

Holiday assemblies can be anything you can come up with that is both creative and tasty, made by assembling common food supplies. At our recent church Christmas festival, someone made a cookie alternative by taking a square pretzel, dabbing on some cake icing and attaching either a red or green M&M. A favorite assembly of mine is the marshmallow snowman.
