Christmas is hilarious with a toddler in tow. It’s fun to watch them figure out what’s going on, and once they catch on to the whole concept of presents, they can’t contain their excitement. We have been laughing at our son’s confusion about gifts. He seems to think that everything under the tree is fair game. Last night he opened up his uncle’s girlfriend’s present when we weren’t looking and she wasn’t even there. It’s also funny how he handles the presents he receives. Once he opens up his toys, he tries to play with them all at once. Last night he got a toy laptop, an Elmo toy and a tricycle. He wanted to ride the tricycle and hold his new toys all at once!
I’ve decided that Christmas is way more fun when you have kids. Before we had kids, we enjoyed spending time with our families for Christmas, but we just didn’t get into giving gifts to each other. In some ways it felt like we were just buying things for ourselves and there wasn’t a whole lot that we really needed anyway. We had just gotten married so the things we would have really loved to get each other, we couldn’t afford. Now that we have a little boy to shop for, though, it’s a lot more fun. He gets so much joy out of the simple things. We bought him a rocking horse and I know that he is going to flip out when he opens it today. What a wonderful example to follow – that of a child who is overjoyed by the smallest of gifts. I lam learning so much by viewing the world with his fresh perspective. He is so excited to see our family and so happy to play with whatever we give him.
